Pediatric Surgery Fellowship
The UCSF Pediatric Surgery Fellowship program will participate in the 2026 match for start date August 1, 2027. Applications must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) website. Twenty applicants will be invited for interviews which will be held virtually.
Applications are considered complete when the following documents have been uploaded to ERAS:
- Personal Statement
- Four Letters of Recommendation
- USMLE Transcript OR COMLEX-USA Transcript
- Photo
- ABSITE scores
Application deadline: December 2025 (exact date TBD)
- All required clinical education for entry into ACGME-accredited fellowship programs must be completed in an ACGME-accredited residency program, an AOA-approved residency program, a program with ACGME International (ACGMEI) Advanced Specialty Accreditation, or a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)-accredited residency program located in Canada.
Prior to entry in the program, fellows must have successfully completed a residency in general surgery.
Fellowship programs must receive verification of each entering fellow’s level of competence in the required field using ACGME, ACGME-I, or CanMEDS Milestones evaluations from the core residency program.
- J-1 applicants will be considered.
Interview dates: Interviews will take place on Friday, January 23, 2026 and Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
This fellowship takes place between the two participating sites, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco (BCHSF) and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland (BCH Oakland).
The faculty at BCHSF have long been leaders in complex areas of pediatric surgery such as neonatal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, fetal care and surgical oncology. The Division of Pediatric Surgery also has a rich history of scholarship in clinical and translational research as well as basic science research. In clinical research, BCHSF has innovated particularly in the areas of fetal surgery and minimally invasive surgery. Thus, in addition to the rich clinical volume, the pediatric surgery fellow is encouraged to participate in the long-standing tradition of clinical research.
BCH Oakland is a full-service children’s hospital in close proximity to BCHSF (distance 11.5 miles) and an American College of Surgeons verified Level 1 pediatric trauma center, one of five in California. The pediatric surgeons at BCH Oakland are clinical faculty in the UCSF Department of Surgery. The two groups of pediatric surgeons interact regularly including weekly joint clinical meetings via a web-based platform. The clinical faculty at BCH Oakland are busy clinicians with specific research interests in trauma and surgical innovation. The two hospitals have complementary strengths and BCH Oakland is critical to the education of a fellow. Combined, the two institutions have a strong commitment to all populations and provide a comprehensive mix of cases available to the pediatric surgery trainee.
The first year of fellowship will include rotations in the NICU, PICU and Urology. A fourth rotation can be chosen from the following: cardiothoracic surgery, neurological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, anesthesia, vascular surgery or transplant surgery. The second year will concentrate solely on general pediatric surgery.
Current PALS and/or ATLS certification are required by the August 1, 2027 start date.
