Dr. James Betts Receives Honorary Doctorate from the University of Vermont (UVM)
The UCSF Department of Surgery would like to congratulate Dr. James Betts for being recognized in a profound way for his lifelong dedication to medicine, service, and philanthropy.

Dr. Betts will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Vermont (UVM)—his alma mater—at the upcoming May 18, 2025, commencement. This honor reflects his extraordinary contributions not only to pediatric surgery but also to education, philanthropy, and public service.
Dr. Betts’ journey to medicine is deeply personal. After his father’s passing when he was just nine years old, his mother took on the immense responsibility of running the family business, the Maple Sugar Bowl Restaurant in Bennington, Vermont. Despite never graduating from high school, she worked tirelessly—offering meals to the community 364 days a year, often at reduced prices or for free to those in need. Her selflessness and dedication instilled in Dr. Betts a lifelong commitment to service.
Shortly after his father’s passing, a young family practice physician, a recent UVM College of Medicine graduate, moved next door. Dr. Betts met him every morning at 6 AM as he left for house calls, and in the evenings, the physician would share his experiences treating patients. This mentorship solidified Dr. Betts’ dream of becoming a doctor.
With the support of financial aid and his own hard work, Dr. Betts attended UVM for both undergraduate and medical school, graduating debt-free. Over the past 41 years, he has made an immeasurable impact as a pediatric surgeon at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, caring for children and families throughout the Bay Area and beyond. His service extends beyond the hospital—he volunteers as a firefighter in Big Sur and serves as a tactical physician with the FBI. A dedicated supporter of UVM, he has played a significant role in fundraising and philanthropy, previously serving on both the Board of Trustees and the UVM Foundation Board.

Recently, UVM President Patty Prelock personally informed Dr. Betts of this recognition, citing his lifelong dedication to the university, his mission-driven work as a pediatric surgeon, and his service as both a firefighter and an FBI tactical physician. She emphasized the profound impact he has made both within and beyond the medical field. His commitment to education and service has now come full circle with this well-earned recognition from UVM.
Reflecting on the honor, Dr. Betts recalls a moment that left a lasting impression on him—having breakfast with the late John Lewis when he was awarded an honorary degree at UVM in 2007. To now join such an esteemed group of honorees is a humbling moment for Dr. Betts, and one that truly underscores the impact of his lifelong dedication to medicine and community service.
Congratualtions to Dr. Betts on this incredible honor! This recognition is a testament to his unwavering passion for healing, mentorship, and giving back.
