Welcome to UCSF Pediatric Surgery. Taking care of children who need surgery is one of the greatest responsibilities and privileges any physician could have. Our group of world-renowned surgeons are honored to take care of the children and their families who need us from the Bay Area and beyond. 

We are based at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, Oakland and San Francisco where we provide state of the art treatment. We are recognized as leaders in such complex fields as fetal surgery, neonatal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, trauma and pediatric surgical oncology. Just as importantly, with equal dedication, we take care of common conditions such as appendicitis, hernias, pilonidal cysts, and chest wall deformities.

We have a rich history of ground-breaking clinical care and research. Dr. Michael Harrison, regarded as the “Father of Fetal Surgery” pioneered multi-disciplinary fetal diagnosis and therapy including the first fetal surgery center in the world. Many other pioneering pediatric surgery practices that are now standard throughout the world originated at UCSF including some neonatal minimally invasive surgeries, most fetal surgeries, and long-term followup for complex surgical anomalies. We continue to innovate in our research labs with federal government funding for our basic science research, device innovation research, and trauma/disaster preparedness protocols and research. In addition to the highest level of clinical care and world-class, innovative research, we are committed to the third pillar of the UCSF mission, education. We train the next generation of leaders who work with us as surgical residents, graduate students in our laboratories, and as pediatric surgery fellows.

Our surgeons, together with our Advanced Practice Nurses and Physicians Assistants and staff, are committed to providing groundbreaking, comprehensive, and compassionate care for our patients and their families.
